Tucked away in the pristine slopes of Friuli, Saša Radikon is continuing the work of his father, Stanko, creating wines that have gained a loyal and committed following. From its experimental beginnings in 1995, Radikon is now one of the most influential producers of the natural wine movement, and their wines absolutely set the benchmark for how complex and compelling orange wine can be. These wines are wild, untamed and not for the faint of heart. Indigenous to Friuli and the grape that started it all for Radikon. Single parcel Ribolla Gialla spent three months on skins, four years in barrel, and over 10 years in the bottle. 3781 is the parcel below Radikon's cellar and where the team harvest the best grapes, only in the greatest vintages. A fantastic blend of organically grown Moscato Di Alessandria (or Zibibbo) with Albanello that spent 15 days on skins before maturation in concrete for six months.

Occhipinti SP68 Bianco 2022

Cult rosato from fastidious experimentalist Frank Cornelissen, made from a blend of Malvasia, Moscadella, Insolia and Nerello Mascalese, from vineyards scattered across the side of Mt Etna. This year's iteration is delightfully refreshing with red fruit aromatics, some spice and of course, volcanic minerality. Having been transfixed by the distinctive features of the region's wines, the Belgian native decided to lease a few vineyards on Etna's volcanic slopes, and eventually purchased his first plot there in 2001. Cornelissen has since become a hugely influential winemaker in the region, working to a strict minimal intervention philosophy in both the vineyard and winery. Both red and white wines are made with traditional Sicilian varieties which undergo lengthy macerations on skins, before being bottled without filtration or sulphur additions.

It’s no surprise to see such a wonderfully expressive wine from Elisabetta Foradori. Ancient Trentino grape, Nosiola, spent an extended period on skins and was aged in amphora, creating a nuanced, yet unmistakable fresh wine. Distinct aromas of elderflower and nettles precede bright acidity on the palate, a touch of spice, and a satisfying lengthy finish. Splash this in a decanter to let the wine breathe a little before drinking. Drink cool, not cold.

This wine is a collaboration with biodynamic winemaker, Marco Devigili, aiming to express the true nature of this variety. After over eight months spent on skins in amphorae, the delicate character of Pinot Grigio makes itself known. Forestal, yet sweet strawberry aromas suggest the intricacy of the wine. Rusty, flinty notes evolve into a palate of white peaches and hibiscus, complemented by enduring salinity.

All of this rings true in this varietal Manzoni Bianco from the Fontanasanta vineyards in the Trento hills. A savoury, generous wine from northern Italy; it’s not often this grape graces our shelves, so while it may not be on your radar yet, we certainly think it should be! Fans of a rich, textured white will find allegiance here. This wine will really come into its own in a few years' time.
