ABOUT TEMPRANILLO
Hardy and drought-resistant, Tempranillo has soared in popularity here in Australia due to its compatibility with both our warm climate and our love of hearty red wines. It can boast notes of juicy cherry, bright tomato, leather, tobacco—or at its best, a combination of all the above! It’s the most planted variety in its spiritual homeland, Spain, where it is labelled under many denominations–the most internationally recognisable, of course, being Rioja. There are some fantastic Australian examples of Tempranillo, too, which offer a fantastic sidestep for lovers of bold Aussie reds such as Shiraz!
Tempranillo is an incredibly versatile variety for the dinner table: youthful, guzzleable styles are often labelled as ‘Joven’ (Spanish for ‘young’) and make fantastic barbecue wines, whereas more savoury, oak-aged examples are a fantastic choice for hearty roasts and rich stews.
